The origin of the solitaire
The solitaire diamond ring can be traced back to the Middle Ages and even the Romans, where a single uncut diamond was set within a gold band. The precious gemstones traveled from India into the appreciative hands of the Romans, and Roman philosopher Pliny the Elder characterized them in his Naturalis Historius as, “The substance that possesses the greatest value, not only among the precious stones, but of all human possessions.”
Centuries later, diamonds mined in India eventually made their way to Europe, where faceting techniques and elaborate gold settings quickly advanced. Up until the discovery of major deposits in South Africa, diamonds were worn exclusively by kings, emperors, and aristocrats, no matter the gender. It wasn't until the 1940s that solitaire diamond rings were popularized as the go-to jewelry piece for engagements thanks to DeBeers' famous "A Diamond is Forever" campaign.
